San Diego Shuai-chiao kung fu for mixed martial arts

San Diego Shuai-Chiao Kung Fu for Mixed Martial Arts

Hello friends and family of Immortal Fitness Martial Arts! We are privileged to be a part of the United States Shuai-chiao Association, and even more so to have Shuai-chiao kung fu black belt coaches here in San Diego.

Today's online kung fu lesson is in regards to shuai-chiao solutions for fighting positions commonly found in mixed martial arts. Sifu Mike Lomotan from the United States Shuai-chiao Association and Sifu Mike Dasargo will demonstrate the muay thai clinch and the wrestler clinch positions that are predominate in mixed martial arts.

Shuai-chiao Kung Fu Pulling Throw from the Muay Thai Clinch

Notes on the Muay Thai Clinch: Cross the palms on the base of the opponents skull (not the back of the neck). Crank the opponents head down so that the chin is touching the chest. Use your elbows and wrist to activate the extensor/flexor frames to maintain leverage and postural dominance. The objective is to keep the opponent off balance while creating knockdown oppurtunities and/or knee strikes.

Notes on the Shuai-chiao Kung Fu Pulling Throw: Piggy back on the opponents effort as he pulls your head down. Pull your opponents elbow close to your chest and keep it glued there. Rotate your shoulders so that your body is perpendicular to the opponent and your ear is resting on your opponents shoulder. This allows your freearm to defend against the muay thai knee strikes while simultaneously breaking down the opponents leverage, posture, and balance. In the same motion, continue the rotational movement by stepping behind and spinning out. It is important to keep the opponents elbow glued to your chest as this gives you the leverage to unbalance your opponent, while the bow stance provides the fulcrum for the opponent to trip over. The technique most effectively executed with proper timing and continuous and explosive motion.

Shuai-chiao Kung Fu Leg Block Throw from the Wrestlers Over-Under Clinch

Notes on the Wrestlers Over-Under Clinch: The objective of the over clinch is to trap the opponents arm while controlling the opponents posture. The under clinch is designed to lift the opponents armpit to create unbalance, or to lift the opponents arm to create an open path to the opponents back. The combined over-under clinch is a general benchmark control clinch that either leads to a takedown, clinch pinch tie (over-under clinch with hands clasped behind opponents back) or passing the arms to a more dominant grappling position.

Notes on the Shuai-chiao Kung fu Inside Leg Block: It is important to prevent the over-under clinch from progressing to the clinch pinch-tie. This is done by reciperocating the over-under clinch to maintain space and seperation, followed up by breaking down the under clinch. This is done by dropping your overhook down an inwards. This provides lateral pressure against the opponents shoulder where they have no leverage. Piggy back on this momentum by passing the opponents under hook to your opposite arm while angling to the opponents dead angle*. This action continues to breakdown the opponents balance bycreating a coil in the opponents spine. Use your leg to bump the opponents lead posting leg while simultaneously using the rotation of your shoulder to press the opponents shoulders towards the floor.

*Dead angle: angle where an imaginary tail creates a kickstand or tripod for balance. Since there is no kickstand or tail, this angle is the weakest point of balance.
