Distinguishing 7 Star Mantis Kung Fu and 8 Step Mantis Kung Fu in San Diego

Comparing and contrasting 7 star mantis kung fu and 8 step mantis kung fu through freestyle fight simulations.

7 Star mantis is a rapid fire striking style with ballistic knockdowns, whereas 8 step mantis are heavy elongated strikes focusing on controlling the opponents balance throughout the striking and/or throw.

Previous attempts to make contrasts visually for 7 star and 8 step mantis boxing has lead us to simply freestyle sparring in hopes that the indicators and applications of techniques would become obvious to the viewer

this video is shot on the droid x...a phone that uses the modern warfare 2 level up indicator for incoming text messages. the timing couldn't be better.

Um...isn't the biggest differences is that 7star uses monkey step footwork and 8step uses 8 different steps footwork? Do your school teaches 8 step footwork? Btw, why do you guys fight with your back leg tip toe? Is that any better?

Hi Little Mantis,

That's actually a very common misconception, as there are significant differences between 8 step mantis kung fu and 7 star mantis kung fu other than footwork.

The misconception that footwork is the key difference comes from the assumption that "8 Step" is what defines the system. It doesn't. 8 Step is the label that observers gave the style to differentiate it from other Mantis Kung fu styles. 8 Step in fact refers to the 8 throwing postures.

Emphasizing throwing and power bomb striking (derivative of Tong Bei methods) is what sets 8 Step Mantis apart from the 7 Star Mantis Kung Fu rapid fire striking and knockdowns.

Our 8 Step Praying Mantis Kung Fu classes in San Diego indeed teaches the 8 step Kung Fu footwork with an emphasis on fighting application rather than forms.

The heel up position that you see is the Yu Huan Bu/Ru Huan Bu which is the main fighting stance for Northern Mantis Kung Fu. It is also referred to as Zhong Bu/central stance, as the depth, length, and weight distribution is centered. The heel up position flexes the ankle, knee and hip of the back leg to store potential energy for explosive monkey steps.

"Better" is relative to the opportunity.
