How is self-defense training different from martial arts training?
Sportive martial arts training prepares you to fight when you are at your best, whereas self-defense training prepares you to fight when you are at your worst.
Personal Safety: Preparation for and prevention of danger.
Self-Defense: Scenario based training that prepares for the most common attacks typical of violent crimes.
Martial Arts training: advanced fighting skills most often designed to combat attacks common within the cultural/social context of the style.
The key to effective self-defense training is to prepare for the most common "jump-off" attacks with simple high success rate techniques. For example, most criminals won't throw a side kick when attacking you, so it would be ineffective to prepare for that stimulus.
